Water supply project from Manavgat River of Turkey to arid Mediterranean countries
Abstract
In this paper, after giving information about offshore structures mentioned below, the importance of water transportation to arid countries and the severe lack of water for settlement areas will be discussed, in relation to the transportation of water from Manavgat River which will begin to supply water to some arid Mediterranean countries in coming days from Turkey. General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works “DSI” has planned the foundation of onshore and offshore facilities to collect and pump water from Manavgat River to the water tankers via two Single Point Mooring “SPMs” terminals. These terminals are located offshore for transport of water to Turkey’s needing cities and to other arid and semi-arid neighboring countries along the Mediterranean coast. The general structures of onshore and offshore facilities can be seen in The figure 2. The construction of these facilities has been already completed within schedule and budget of offshore works. Offshore facilities involve a valve chamber located at the onshore, near to the beach, (4) four 1200 mm diameter submarine pipelines and (2) two Single Point Mooring system (SPMs) terminals consisting of a Pipeline End Manifold (PLEMs) structure, a buoy submarine and floating hoses and mooring chain with anchors. All are to be installed in approximately 80 meters depth off the Mediterranean coastline of Turkey near the Manavgat River mouth. In this project, the most important thing is to determine the place of SPMs, tanker sizes, the cost of water transport by tankers and the cost of water.
