Abstract

Until relatively recently, the main natural source of water for the state of Bahrain is slow to non-renewable ground water. Desalination technology was introduced in mid–1970s and developed very rapidly to satisfy the water needs of growing demand in the state of Bahrain and also an alternative towards ground water over exploitation. As new natural water supply sources have become less accessible, and less acceptable environmentally, managing demand have taken an increasing importance. That is why water distribution management as a policy has been seriously and permanently adopted in Bahrain as a mean towards conservation and as a solution to manage the increased water demand under the limited water resources. The intention of this paper is to share Bahrain’s experience in water management as a strategy towards conservation through leakage and waste prevention, pressure control, and replacement of mains and service pipes, metering and plant protection.
