Design of butt welds and transverse fillet welds in very high strength (VHS®) circular steel tubes
Abstract
This paper describes a series of axial tensile tests on butt welds and transverse fillet welds in very high strength (VHS®) circular steel tubes. The diameter of the VHS sections varied from 31.8mm to 75mm with the wall thickness between 1.6mm and 2mm. All butt welds and transverse fillet welds of VHS tubes failed in the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) with a significant reduction in strength. Two design approaches are proposed to modify the existing design formulae for VHS tubes. The reliability analysis method is used to calibrate the proposed design formulae.
