Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to verify concrete surface and embedment strain gauging as a valid method of determining the distribution of stress throughout the depth of a reinforced concrete member. This is achieved by calculating the sectional forces of two reinforced concrete slabs with adequate concrete gauging to measure strains on the top surface, at mid depth, and on the bottom surface. It is shown that confidence in the instrumentation technique and application of constitutive relations can be gained through satisfactory correlation of experimental sectional forces with those calculated from equilibrium considerations.
