Flexural response of dense graded asphalt (DG14) paving on geo-fabrics
Abstract
This paper highlights a joint research effort of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Queensland Department of Main Roads (QDMR) to overcome or delay the reflective cracks. A series of tensile experiments were conducted on asphalt pavement model using geo-synthetic materials. The structural response of the dense graded 14mm (DG 14) asphalt layer was tested under applied tensile forces in the laboratory set-up. The DG 14 pavement model of 40 mm, 50mm and 60mm thickness were stretched horizontally. The interlayer of road paving fabrics (PF1, PF2 geo-fabrics) and geo-grid (SS 20) was also incorporated at the base. The tensile force-displacement characteristics revealed increase in tensile strength and fatigue life due to geosynthetics and new asphalt layers were better than overlay on existing cracked section. These findings will be significantly useful in the pavement design as well as pavement rehabilitation processes.
