Abstract

The reproduction of four species has been followed in Milford Haven, south-west Wales. Data were numbers of newly settled ancestrulae present on samples of Fucus serratus fronds and, for Alcyonidium hirsutum and J. reticulum only, numbers of embryo-containing brood chambers. Based on 2_ years’ results, A. hirsutum and A. reticulum are shown to breed in winter and A. polyown and Flustrellidra hispida in summer, with some variation between sites. Different settling seasons help to limit competition for space on growing F. serratus .
