Abstract

This paper provides an economic perspective on intensive groundwater use. The chapter begins by exploring the economic reasons behind the growth in groundwater use. Subsequently, an economic framework for analyzing the efficiency and equity of alternative institutional arrangements for managing groundwater is outlined. Case studies are examined in order to observe both successes and failures in groundwater management and trends in innovation. Finally, recommendations are made about the characteristics of groundwater management policies that promote economic efficiency and equity.
