Abstract

This paper describes the development and application of a model for fast cost estimates for unmanned, orbital spacecraft. The model, called “RACE”, requires only limited input information at system and subsystem level in order to give a first, rough Phase B & C/D cost estimate for new projects. The model is specifically tailored for use during the starting phases of concurrent engineering studies. It enables early indications of the probable cost-range for a spacecraft concept, the indication of major cost drivers and facilitates early, system/sub-system level design-to-cost trade-offs. The actual model is not available for use outside the ESA-ESTEC Cost Engineering Section. However, this paper describes the development and specifics of the RACE model in order to show how such a model may be developed by others for their own specific needs.
