Abstract

Changing customer demands, enlarged competition and globalisation increased the pressure on organisations to improve quality and flexibility, while reducing costs. Enterprise-wide information systems are adopted to contribute to achieving these goals. Such systems encompass several functions and disciplines as well as different hierarchical levels. Implementing these systems in organisations is complex. Current implementation efforts still do not sufficiently meet prior expectations despite the many accounts of experiences with earlier introductions of new technology. In this paper, the current situation with respect to implementation of these systems will be discussed based on practical and theoretical accounts of experiences with implementation efforts. Implementation of enterprise systems will be considered as an innovation process from a resourcebased point of view. A framework for research into theory and practice of enterprise system implementation will be presented based on existing models in literature on innovation, learning and knowledge management.
