Abstract

Concurrent Engineering (CE) can be adopted in the construction industry to provide an effective framework for integrating construction design and construction. This has led to various efforts to develop appropriate implementations. This paper demonstrates how Restricted Colored Petri Nets (RCPNs) approach can be used for CE in construction for the improvement of two concurrent phases namely construction-process design and implementation and to guide designers in making appropriate choices in the early stages of project design. An example illustrating how construction managers can design a construction process during the construction operation is shown in this paper to illustrate an application of RCPNs. The advantages of RCPNs as an applicable tool for the modeling and simulation of concurrent processes are discussed.
