Abstract

A theoretical framework for chemomechanical problems within the theory of open system thermodynamics is presented. The governing equations, the balance of mass and momentum of the reactant, are discretized with the help of the finite element method. While the classical spatial motion approach is applied to analyze the evolution of the density and the movement of physical particles relative to the ambient space, the material motion problem allows for the evaluation of the movement of physical particles relative to the ambient material. The basic features of the spatial and the material motion framework in the context of chemomechanical coupling will be discussed with the help of selected computational examples.
