Abstract

The excavation of the six houses yielded no information whatsoever on the exact date of the city’s foundation. No coins were found in the trenches that held the limestone blocks of the walls’ foundations. The number of coins of Kassandros (306–297 BC) is relatively large, certainly when compared with the number of coins of Demetrios I Poliorketes (294–287 BC), but these quantities of coins do not tell us when or by whom the city was founded. Coins of Kassandros have been found at many archaeological sites, generally in a good state of preservation. Most of the datable pottery found at the site of New Halos dates from the last quarter of the 4th century BC; only a few items date from the first quarter of the 3rd century BC (cf. Ch. 3: 1.4).
