Abstract

This paper reports the results of the first multidisciplinary field study carried out on the floodplain and channel of the River Loire in the area of Tours, France. The evolution of the floodplain from the end of the last glacial to modern times is discussed and a model of human-environment interaction proposed. During the early Holocene, the influence of natural factors is dominant although the environment is increasingly influenced by human activity through time, particularly through the development of the urban zone of the city of Tours and channel engineering works.
