Abstract

Built-up composite columns loaded in axial compression or in combined axial compression and bending were studied. An experimental program to investigate the effect of encasing built-up steel sections in concrete on the behaviour and ultimate load carrying capacity was carried out. The possibility of constructing these columns in components was also examined. This becomes relevant in the context of “megacolumns” where constructing in components would enable precasting. Design equations have been developed based on the recommendations in EC4 Part 1.1. The method assumes linear strain distribution across the cross-section.
