Abstract

This paper presents a prediction method for ultimate shear strength of perforated rib shear connector, considering with confinement effect caused by factors such as concrete covering, reinforcing bars set around perforated rib plate as well as through the hole. Push-out tests and pull-out tests were conducted to investigate their collapse mechanism. From test results, the maximum shear strength, in common with both test methods, is obtained when a crack appears on the concrete surface along the rib plate. However, slip behaviors and ultimate strengths were different according to the difference of test method, though the slip behavior around the hole may be essentially same in both test methods. This facts would be caused by the difference of confinement condition of concrete in the hole of PBL. Taking the factors affecting the concrete confinement into account, a prediction method was formulated for the ultimate shear strength of PBL, and it is shown that this method can predict the ultimate strengths with good accuracy, comparing both test results.
