Abstract

The concept of a “short column” is widely understood and used in the determination of the strength of reinforced concrete columns. When designing columns, the degree of slenderness for the columns is determined and the cross-sectional strength reduced using various methods. In the current Australian standard, the slenderness limits for short columns with no strength reduction were determined using normal grades of concrete. Furthermore the moment amplification factors and the column stiffness at the buckling loads were also based on these normal grade concretes.
