Abstract

This paper summarizes the damage analysis of reinforced concrete panels subjected to reversed cyclic shear. The objective is to apply a recently proposed damage model ( Hindi and Sexsmith, 2001 ) to shear dominated elements (panels) under cyclic loading. The damage model is based on residual monotonic energy after cycling. A detailed comparison between the observed damage of five panels and the predicted damage throughout the loading history is presented. The monotonic load–deformation response for each of the panels is predicted using a newly developed model ( Mansour, 2001 ) since it is needed for the damage prediction. The strength deterioration (descending portion) after yielding in the monotonic response is considered and modified in the damage model. The test panels are reinforced with a steel grid parallel to the plane of pure shear. The main variable in the test panel was the reinforcement ratio. The damage model compared reasonably well to the observed damage throughout the loading history.
