Abstract

A basic use-case driven UML process as suggested by Jacobson is now well understood. In this paper, we report on experiences made in the CAPE-OPEN initiative, a worldwide standardization effort of the chemical industries focusing on the following question: How can such a software development process be used in a standardization effort especially if (a) the software to be developed is component software with strict interoperation requirements, and (b) there is the need not only to specify the standard but also to support its acceptance among users? A sketch of an enhanced version of the Unified Process together with a suite of supporting tools is presented as a way towards a solution.
