Abstract

In situ bioprecipitation (ISBP) of heavy metals as metal sulfides by the activity of sulfatereducing bacteria (SRB) is a promising strategy for sustaining groundwater quality. The feasibility of the ISBP process for a Zn,Cd,Ni and Co -polluted industrial site was studied in column experiments, using lactate, molasses or HRC Ⓡ as supplemented electron donor and C -source. In addition, the effect of extra N/P was evaluated. In order to link the results of analytical analyzes to SRB-community composition and activity, the SRB population was monitored by molecular tools such as SRB-subgroup or – genus specific PCR and DGGE of the 16S rRNA- and dsr (dissimilatory sulfite reductase) gene.
