Abstract

Glacial and peri giacial deposits of Quaternary age on Mount Kenya have been dated by use of several relative age-dating methods. Geologic-climatic units, consisting of moraines, rock glaciers, talus, solifluction debris, alluvial fans, and valley trains, display distinctive topographic relationships, morphology, weathering characteristics, and soil-profile development representative of the age of the unit. Five major stratigraphic entities, which developed following periods of glaciation, are recognized between 2990 and 4725 m, and assigned ages ranging from early Pleistocene to late Holocene. Soil profiles are from representative deposits comprised largely of phonolite, agglomerate, basalt and syenite, in areas of alpine and subalpine vegetation.
