Abstract

The problem of the determination of in-situ properties of soil media constitutes an important aspect of geotechnical engineering. Such evaluations can be used to great advantage in situations where undisturbed sample recovery of soil samples and subsequent laboratory testing present formidable difficulties. In recent years, a considerable proportion of the research activity in geotechnical engineering has been devoted to the development and use of sundry testing devices such as shallow and deep plate load tests, pressuremeter tests and other penetration tests, for the estimation of in-situ deformability and strength characteristics of both cohesive and cohesionless soil media. The recent articles by Mitchell and Gardner (1975) and Ladd et al. (1977) clearly illustrate the importance of in-situ testing in geotechnical engineering.
