Abstract

The cyclic or transient loading of a saturated soil results in the generation of excess pore pressures, depending upon the deformation and drainage characteristics of the soil. In a first approximation these pore pressures may be calculated using Biot’s theory of consolidation (Biot, 1941) and an analytical or numerical solution technique. In order to estimate the influence of certain parameters simple analytical approximations may be useful. Such simple approximations can be obtained in the following way.
