The potential liquefaction analysis of Turnu Magurele-Nicopole Dam
Abstract
The dynamic analysis of earth dams, taking into account the effects of induced cyclic forces and lique faction phenomena, was first suggested about 15 years ago by, the U.S. engineers ( Newmark 1965 , Seed 1966) Since that time the procedures have been modified and refined and they have been shown to provide a useful basis for evaluating the observed performance of a number of dams subjected to strong earthquake shaking (e.g. Sheffield Dam, Seed et al. 1969; Dry Canion Dam, Lee and Walters 1973 ; San Fernando Dam Seed et al. 1973). The new concept of seismic stability evaluation was (Turnu Magurele Dam, Priscu et al. 1978 ; Lower Olt Dam, Priscu et al. 1979 ). The stability analysis has led to different modifications of the previous solutions. As an example, figure 1 shows the two tipical profiles for Lower Olt dam, the first alternative and the modified adopted one. One can notice the removing off of the fine sand layer from the upper zone of the foundation ground, the layer which has shown liquefaction potential.
