Abstract

The phenomena of liquefaction is key to the earthquake resistant design of foundation structures. Many researchers have studied liquefaction of soil deposits but the mechanical process to reach liquefaction has not been clarified up until now. This is caused by the fact that the work-hardening process with dilatancy has not been strictly examined under cyclic loading conditions. The object of this paper is therefore to introduce a relatively simple incremental stress-strain relation which will permit non-linear analysis while taking account of liquefaction phenomena, especially when the seismic response of the subsurface ground is considered.
