Abstract

Research of the phenomena of liquefaction gained momentum after great damages caused by known earthquakes in Anchorage, Alaska, and Niigata, Japan, in 1964 although the very phenomena were known much earlier starting from the pioneer work by Casagrande 1936 ( Seed, 1976 .). Construction of nuclear power plants and large offshore structures has also contributed to that momentum. As a result, the Understanding of mechanisms which lead to liquefaction and other phenomena connected with cyclic loading of soils is today oh a very high level. Also, the laboratory and in situ techniques for evaluating mechanical characteristics of cyclically loaded Soils are well established.
