Abstract

When faced with the task of developing an operational system for, say, large area crop yield estimation, the program manager is quickly faced with having to deal with the question of what models might be acceptable for use. The model selection process will lead one to consider several factors. This paper will discuss some of the factors associated with model selection in an operational system and discuss other meteorological data problems associated with this system. For the purpose of our discussion, operationally refers to the real-time use of the model with a time lapse of a few days after receipt of the required data in a given crop year.
