Abstract

Information on the size of harvests is needed for a variety of purposes. Government departments require it for administrative purposes, possibly for measures to regulate quantities or prices or for external trade settlements. Private firms, particularly those engaged in wholesale and external trade, are interested in appropriate data for their marketing and storage arrangements. Farmers themselves may use the harvest data calculated for their country or region as the basis for their seasonal purchases in order to obtain particularly favourable prices.
