Abstract

Observations and finite element analyses have been made for the evaluation of safety of fill dams. In static condition, stresses and deformations during construction are investigated. It is found that the nonlinear built-up analyses using parameters obtained from triaxial CD tests are capable of predicting these static behaviors. In dynamic condition, earthquake observations, shaking table tests of fill dam model and seismic response analyses are performed. Two types of constitutive relation are adopted in the analyses, one is linear elastic and the other is perfectly plastic with non-associated flow rule. These numerical capabilities are verified by the results of observations and shaking table tests.
