Abstract

The performance of yield pillar is studied under strong roof, weak coal and weak floor condition. By employing finite element method that takes time dependent and plastic failure of rock into consideration, the major functions and mechanisms of yield pillar are discussed. A standard procedure for the determination of yield pillar size is also developed. Using the data obtained from a West Virginia coal mine, a suitable range of yield pillar size is determined for a case study.
