On the knowledge of the geological hazard connected with undergound cavities in urban areas: A case history
Abstract
Natural or artificial cavities are frequently present in many southern Italy urban areas.Often this situation represents a geological hazard. We report a case history of a geological and geophysical survey carried out in the Apulian town of Canosa where many man-made cavities,in many cases unknown, are present in calcarenitic rocks, causing buildings collapse and roads subsidence.By detailed geological investigations and geoelectrical prospecting the main hazard causes are evidenced.
