Abstract

On 27th of November 1987 a landslide occurred in “Le Mottace” (Upper Basin of the Arno River). The landslide cut off both the Arezzo-Stia railway and the provincial road and it occluded the river-bed for over 2/3 of its width. So it was necessary to examine the geological data of the surronding area because of two possible dangers connected with a future slide. The first danger is the hydraulic risk related to the occlusion of the river (in that place it has a basin of 738 Km 2 ). The second danger is the more immediate risk linked with the slide, because the necessity of keeping the railway line and the road clear and safe. The research done so far allows us to place the landslide in a more ample context of an “ancient landslide”. Consequentely a plan for an automatic monitoring was drawn up: it will work like an alarm system and for research purpose.
