Abstract

The main geotechnical problem posed by pelitic rocks of the Corumbatai Formation, is the intensive superficial disaggregation, resulting in serious difficulties for the slope maintenance of roads and railways, sometimes with traffic disturbance. Previous studies pointed out that the behaviour of the clays minerals types smectites and chlorites submitted to drying/wetting cycles, is the cause of the phenomenon. In this paper are presented tests results of samples of Corumbatai Formation submitted to simulation reproducing the disaggregation. Thus, chemical and grain size analysis were realized, beyond the disaggregability test until Id 2 , as recommended by the ISRM, but extended by five cycles; alternated with the same number of drying/wetting cycles, that represent the closest simulation of the phenomenon.
