Abstract

In The Netherlands more than 6 million tons of clay are used annually in the ceramic industry and for dike construction. To evaluate the potential clay resources, an inventory was taken during 1988/89. Phase 1 of this inventory involved evaluating the material requirements and test methods used in the ceramic industry and the dike construction industry, and an evaluation of the data and relevant test methods available at the mapping institutes. Recommendations were formulated for a 1:250.000 reconnaissance map showing clay resources suitable for the ceramic industry and dike construction. Phase 2 involved production of this map by means of a Geographical Information System and calculation of the available clay reserves. The results of the inventory will be used for the national policy on surficial raw materials.
