Abstract

During the preliminary study of rockfills index properties are usually used to allow a fast and inexpensive characterization of the rock material. Once one knows the strength of irregular rock lumps it is possible to make a prediction of the mechanical properties of the rockfill using some available correlations. In Portugal, it is a common practice to use the crushing test to evaluate strength. In this work the use of the point load test with the same objective is proposed. In spite of the small number of tests carried out, the analysis of the available data indicates that both tests are related. The point load test can be used extensively for this purpose because it is fast, easy to carry out, and the required equipment is light and can be carried anywhere in the field.
