Abstract

The Korean coal briquette used as a fuel mainly for heating is 15 cm in diameter and 14 cm in height, weighing about 3.6 kg and having 22 holes. The ash residue resulting from the combustion of the briquette weighs about 1.5 kg and is one of the three solid by-products of the coal industry in the Republic of Korea. Little attention has been paid to such waste products as a potential replacement of natural material. The ash was tested for its specific gravity, gradation, compaction characteristics, CBR, permeability, thermal conductivity, chemistry, and mineralogy. The test procedures and ash characterization were discussed. The ash waste was classified as SM according to the Unified Soil Classification System. Most of the ash particles were porous, giving rise to their lightness and relatively low thermal conductivity. The main inorganic constituents of a representative sample were Si, Al, and Fe: the oxides of these three elements comprised 80% of the ash composition. The minerals identified were mullite, quartz, magnetite, ilmenite, glass, biotite, and amphibole. Based on the test results, the ash waste can be used as a cover material for sanitary landfill as well as a construction material for road sub-base.
