Preliminary Q-system assessment of the tunnelling conditions of the Pala-Maneri hydel scheme (Uttar Pradesh/India)
Abstract
The major and critical component of the Pala Maneri Hydel Scheme is the 11.3 Km long horse-shoe shaped equivalent section of 6m diameter headrace tunnel. The rocks encompassing the scheme have been grouped as (i) the Garhwal Group comprising quartzite and basic intrusives, and (ii) the Central Crystallines containing a variety of gneisses and schists. The two groups of rocks (both Proterozoic age) are separated by the Main Central Thrust (MCT). In order to evaluate the tunnelling conditions, the Q-system has been used. In view of the rugged relief and unapproachable terrain a deliberately biased sampling of the best and the worst rocks have been carried out by studying 13 blocks in detail. On the basis of the studies, it has been concluded that in 93% reach no support shall be required, in 6% reach spot bolting with shotcreting shall be required and only in 1% reach heavy cast concrete lining with tensioned bolts shall be necessary.
