Abstract

To study the tensile stress developed in the roof of mine enlarged openings, photoelastic model was prepared and examined. The model was loaded in two directions to simulate the real case in the underground, then the opening was excavated. The stress field around all the cross-sections generated during the enlargement stages was studied. The driving starts with a central pioneer heading, and enlarged through three stages to reach a horseshoe cross-section. All the cross-sections generated during the enlargement stages are free of tension. The results of the present study indicate that, it is possible to arrange the sequences of the enlargement of underground openings to avoid the tension developed in the roof during the enlargement stages.
