Abstract

Core material obtained from coal bearing rocks of the Vryheid Formation in north Natal has shown the existence of numerous distinct sedimentary facies. These facies have widely differing geotechnical properties which obviously influence the design and development of coal mines. It would appear that most stable strata belong to the fine grained arenaceous facies, the coarse grained arenaceous facies being slightly less stable. By contrast poor roof and floor conditions exist in argillaceous rocks. The latter deteriorate rapidly on exposure with consequent reduction of strength and potential instability. The uniaxial compressive and tensile strength of the rocks concerned was determined along with their free swelling coefficient. The latter, together with the uniaxial compressive strength, was used to assess the geodurability of the material tested. The geodurability classification indicated that some argillaceous material, in particular, was of very poor quality. The durability and tensile strength provide an indication of the potential behaviour of the roof rocks when mining takes place, the direct tensile strength being a good index property in this respect. The uniaxial compressive strength is required for pillar design and an understanding of the failure of floors in coal mines.
