A tourist development scheme using underground spaces and earth covered structures
Abstract
In the southern part of the Province of Limburg in the Southeast of the Netherlands, extensive exploitation of the Cretaceous calcarenite plateau has taken place since pre-historical times. Historically most excavations were underground whereas present excavation is by open pit quarrying. South Limburg is very popular with tourism and is also subject to continual urban and industrial encroachment. A solution is sought through combining the skills of architects, civil engineers and engineering geologists to more effectively use surface and underground excavations in favour of further sacrificing the landscape. An example is given of a tourist resort proposal as part of a master plan for further developing the tourist, infrastructural and industrial potential of Valkenburg through the use of excavated spaces.
