An engineering geological appraisal of the progress of construction of the Lakhwar underground power house
Abstract
The construction of Lakhwar underground power house on the river Yamuna in a basic pluton is under advanced stage of construction. The 130m(L) × 20m (W) × 46m (H) cavern is located on the right bank in a moderately to highly jointed basic body. For designing the support system the rock loads were computed by using the available techniques. The values of rock loads computed by RMR classification are within reasonable limit with reference to the ones established by the wedge method. The correlation between the RMR and Q system suggested by Bieniawski is found to be more realistic than the one suggested by Rutledge and Preston. The P-roof for good and the poor rock was computed based on the Q values (Barton et al.). Keeping in view the location of the cavern in the close vicinity of 180m head of dam reservoir and lack of facilities as well as expertise in bolting, a conservative approach for the support design was adopted. The excavation of the cavern has been completed upto the roof arch by conventional drilling and blasting method and has progressed in predetermined steps making use of the existing exploratory and approach adits. No major problem of rock falls was faced during the excavation and the rock behaved exceptionally well allowing ample time for the support erection. About 22,000m 3 of rock has already been excavated in a period of about two years. Necessary instrumentation has been planned and is being installed to monitor the rock behaviour during the after the construction.
