Abstract

The Hoorensberg mine is one of the abandoned room and pillar mines, excavated in Upper Cretaceous calcarenites, which is affected by intensive pillar fracturing. Subsidence following a large scale collapse would severely damage constructions at the surface above. A support plan was developed, which was based on stability analysis using the tributary area method as outlined by Goodman (1980). Shape factors were determined experimentally for intact and cracked pillars respectively. The results of the stability analysis reflect the actual state of the mine reasonably well, but there is a need for some basic improvements of the method.
