Abstract

As a part of a major upgrading of sewage disposal and treatment within the drainage area of the City of Sheffield a system of low level intercepting sewers is under construction. The works are located in the valleys of the rivers Don and Sheaf with excavations to depths of between 20 and 30 m below ground level. The geological and hydrological setting of the Lower Don Valley together with the effects of past mining activities in the area give rise to a highly variable and, in parts, adverse and potentially hazardous tunnelling prospect. The paper briefly reviews the geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical appraisal of ground conditions for sub-surface excavations. The generation and presentation of engineering geological information are illustrated with reference to particular features identified during the investigation in the Lower Don Valley.
