Engineering geological modelling of the underground waste disposal site in Loviisa, Finland
Abstract
Site investigations have been made in the Loviisa power plant area for assessing the suitability of the bedrock for the final disposal of low and medium-level nuclear wastes. The study area covers a small island on the coast of the Baltic Sea in southern Finland. The bedrock consists of coarse grained Precambrian rapakivi granite. Typical for granitic rocks, two vertical and one horizontal fracture sets are present, the last mentioned of them being dominant. A three-dimensional engineering geological model has been prepared by using computer aided design (CAD). The model covers a bedrock block, which is some 400 × 600 m wide and 200 m thick. Three gently dipping fracture zones divide the rock mass into zones of intact and broken rock. The model forms the basis for the groundwater flow modelling and siting of the repository.
