Abstract

From the view point of multiple-utilization of land and the reduction of heat loss from low temperature materials, storage of these materials in underground openings excavated in rock mass should he considered. In this case, leakage of liquid, gas and heat along the cracks becomes an important problem. One of the useful prevention technique is to enclose the gas with water, which we call a “water curtain system”. This paper describes the physical properties of ice obtained by experiment at low temperatures. Finally, the behavior of rock and ice were analyzed theoretically and the effect on the water curtain system is discussed.
