Abstract

Reservoir siltation control measures depend upon recognition of potential sediment sources for fixing catchment management priorities. A technique for comprehensive catchment analysis, aimed at isolating critical sediment generating sectors, is suggested. It involves determination of ‘sediment generation potential (pS)’ of the catchment on a grid pattern, taking into account factors responsible for sediment generation, followed by calculation of share of each sub-basin in the overall sediment yield from the catchment. The sedimentation share, designated as ‘sediment contribution (cS)’, is obtained in pS km 2 and is used as the percentage of total sedimentation, rather than the absolute sediment yield. Application of the technique for analysing Pench river catchment (4273 km 2 ) at Totladoh Dam in Maharashtra, India, has revealed that combined sub-basins of Ghatamali, Sukri and Mandhan nallas (569 km 2 ), with a ‘cS’ value of 189,477 pS km 2 , account for 42.2% of total sedimentation, forming the most critical reach.
