Abstract

Underground investigation at Buckreef Gold Mine was undertaken in view of finding out whether rock bolting technique can be introduced as roof support in the interest of safety and whether the size of the crown pillar can be reduced from 10m thickness to 5m so as to increase the quantity of ore extraction from stopes. Investigations comprised of visual observations, in-situ and laboratory testing of rock samples with the help of schmidt hammer and point load machine. The rock was found to have high compressive strength but fails by splitting at the comers of the pillars. By considering the failure pattern of the rock, rock bolting can only sound well in the second level while the remaining levels can be supported by timbers, while the reduction of pillar dimensions has to be done in few stopes with instrumentation to assess the support behaviour of the pillars.
