Engineering and geological aspects of bridge failures during the 1987/88 floods in Natal, South Africa
Abstract
Exceptionally heavy rains, resulting in severe flood damage in the coastal and inland regions of Natal, during September 1987 and February 1988 respectively, have severely damaged or destroyed a number of important road bridges. In most cases the damage was the result of either foundation failure or because of a change in river course. Foundation failures took place mainly as a result of deep scour in alluvial deposits in which bridge piers or supporting piles have been located. Scour has also affected bridges founded on bedrock. Accumulation of trees and other debris on bridge piers and decks played a significant role in many of the failures. Severe disruption of traffic and large repair costs as a result of bridge failures have highlighted the need for thorough investigations of geological and riverine environments before bridge construction.
