Abstract

The continental shelf in the Pearl River Mouth Basin is generally of good engineering conditions. However, the slope is a relatively unstable area caused by frequent earthquakes, intensive fractures, slides, turbidity currents, etc. Six strata with different geotechnical properties are divided within 120 meters below the seafloor in the basin. Two of them of low shear strength, strata 1 and 3, are unaccepted as bearing layers. Others of high bearing capacity are considered as good foundation for engineering facilities.
