Abstract

In offshore soil investigations flush thin-walled shelby tubes are pushed hydraulically at a constant rate of penetration into the soil at the bottom of a borehole. Analysis of the recorded forces has enabled accurate definition of the disturbed zone directly below the drillbit as well as whether stones or gravel may have disturbed the sample during penetration of the tube. Moreover, using a conventional pile capacity side wall friction relationship it has proved possible to construct in-situ (remoulded) shear strength vs depth profiles. Cross plots of the pushing force vs the laboratory shear strength show good correlation. This may indicate that analysis of the force data of the hydraulic push sampler is very suitable for in-situ shear strength evaluation, especially when the object is to obtain wall friction values for pile capacity calculations.
