Material behaviour of coal under high stresses and temperatures
Abstract
In the field of underground coal conversion in Europe, the linking technology is an important field of interest. The stability of linking channels at great depth, burned in reverse combustion, is the topic of a research projekt at the University of Kaiserslautern. Various experimental studies about the temperaturedependant anisotropic behaviour of coal have been accomplished to evaluate a material law for numerical investigations. All the coal samples tested are high bituminous and come from the Camphausen-mine near SaarbrUcken in the Saarregion : The specimens were bored from coal blocks located in situ at a depth of about 800 m. The thermomechanical behaviour of coal is derived from triaxial tests. The samples were subjected to both, different stresses and various temperatures from 20° C to 200°C. The diameters of the coal samples differ from 70mm to 120 mm. The anisotropic behaviour of the coal is described by the Damage-Tensor Analysis, introduced by Kawamoto (1988). The anisotropy can be described by the three dimensional area density of the cracks in the coal, which is derived from representative coalcubes. It is suggested that the material behaviour of the unfractured coal is isotropic. The necessary material parameters are derived from triaxial compression tests. To describe the general material behaviour, the model of Mohr-Coulomb is involved.
